The Great Artists Magazine Collection Reference

Are you familiar with this awesome magazine collection? The Great Artists were weekly published magazines offered by subscription in the 1980's by Marshall Cavendish Partworks. From looking at the magazines, it seems they were offered in UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa and Malta.

With the focus on major European artists, each magazine covers one artist, talking about their life, art, and background history of the time, with plenty of photos of not only the artist's artworks, but images related to them. This series is great especially for art history students.

The collection started with #1 John Constable, and a free issue #2 Van Gogh, most likely to encourage more subscription members. With total of 95 artists and index making up 96 magazines, they offered 8 binders for AUD 9.95ea.

One Sunday I went to a local gallery, and they had clear out sales of books and magazines happening. I scored the entire collection of The Great Artists at a bargain price.

Marshall Cavendish also published The Great Composers 46 magazine series with CDs prior to The Great Artists, which I find are very educational since the information on the composing giants along with pictures and. photos are not as easy to find as big artists.

Keep an eye out for these magazines if you are an art & music lover.
